Portland Celebrates 11th International Day of Yoga

Portland, OR — June 21, 2025 — Portland joined cities across the globe in celebrating the 11th International Day of Yoga, a worldwide observance declared by the United Nations to promote the practice of yoga and its many benefits. This year’s theme, “One Earth, One Health,” emphasized the deep connection between individual well-being and the health of the planet.

In alignment with the global initiative, Portland-area events spotlighted wellness, mindfulness, and sustainability, drawing participation from people of all ages and backgrounds. The highlight of the day was a large outdoor yoga session at Shute Park in Hillsboro, organized by the Consulate General of India in Seattle in collaboration with local Indian cultural organizations and wellness groups. The event included guided yoga flows, pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, and short talks on the roots of yoga and its relevance in today’s world.

Earlier in the month, a vibrant community gathering at SE Salmon Street in downtown Portland also drew a diverse crowd. This event featured live demonstrations, introductory yoga for beginners, and cultural performances celebrating yoga’s Indian heritage. Both events emphasized inclusivity, inviting newcomers, families, seniors, and children to participate regardless of skill level.

In addition to the flagship events, numerous yoga studios, fitness centers, and community spaces across the metro area offered free yoga classes, mindfulness workshops, and wellness talks throughout the week. Many venues incorporated eco-friendly practices, such as encouraging participants to bring reusable water bottles and sustainable mats, reflecting the broader “One Earth” message.
